There is no "pre-steps" IMO, but its good to backup /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf, tho I had no need.

apt-get update
apt-get install -y mdadm
mdadm --assemble --scan

At this point, I like to use BLKID to confirm its visible and mount to test

blkid
mount /dev/md0 /mnt/

Append new info to MDAMD.conf

mdadm --detail --scan >> /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf

Update InitRamFS

update-initramfs -u

Troubleshooting

nano /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf
ARRAY /dev/md/0 level=raid5 num-devices=3 metadata=00.90 UUID=a44a52e4:0211e47f:f15bce44:817d167c

Change to:

ARRAY /dev/md0 level=raid5 num-devices=3 metadata=00.90 UUID=a44a52e4:0211e47f:f15bce44:817d167c

Make sure the output of :

mdadm --detail --scan

= mdadm.conf
